In the fall of 1966, John Lennon took a break from the Beatles and went to southern Spain, where he acted in Richard Lester’s black comedy “How I Won the War” and wrote the first draft of “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

From that little-known chapter of Lennon’s life, the Spanish director and screenwriter David Trueba has extracted “Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed,” the Spanish entry in the competition for the Oscar for best foreign-language film.

The main character in “Living Is Easy,” a mixture of comedy and drama that won six Goyas, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscar, is Antonio, a shy schoolteacher who is such a fan of the Beatles that he uses their lyrics to teach English to his students. Hearing that Lennon is in Spain, he decides to drive to the film set to meet his hero, and along the way picks up a pair of hitchhikers: a pregnant teenager on the lam from a home for wayward girls and a sensitive boy fleeing his overly strict father.

Antonio is based on a real person, a teacher named Juan Carrión, who actually met Lennon and still has the notebooks in which Lennon corrected Mr. Carrión’s transcriptions of lyrics from Beatles albums. He complained to Lennon that the Beatles did not print their lyrics on the jackets of their albums, and whether by coincidence or not, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and other later records did come with lyric sheets.

Spanish helmer Fernando Trueba took home the 1993 foreign-language film Oscar for his period dramedy “Belle Epoque.” More than two decades later, his younger brother, David, is hoping to bring a second Oscar into the family with his Beatles-themed road movie “Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed.”

Trueba, the youngest of eight siblings, is no rookie at the foreign-lingo film Oscar game. His 2003 drama “Soldiers of Salamina” repped Spain in the category, but didn’t get nominated.

He might have a better chance this time. “Living Is Easy” is tipped to be among the 15 favorites out of the record 83 entries in the Academy’s foreign-language film race. Outsider Pictures released it in the U.S. in the summer when it took in nearly $13,000.

David Trueba abrió el IV Festival de Cine La Orquídea de Cuenca con su laureada película Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados, ganadora de seis Premios Goya este año.

“El cine te seduce a veces con elementos que no son sinceros”. El jovial cuarentón de sonrisa bonachona que respondía la intensa curiosidad de un trío de cinéfilos –el fotógrafo también participaba del extenso diálogo– se refería además a su posición dual de periodista y cineasta, porque para él es difícil definir su predilección. Para Trueba el periodismo es rapidez y contactos casi inmediatos. En cambio, el cine “es un viaje largo que puede tomar años y es un oficio un poco tramposo”, recalca.

Insiste: en el cine contemporáneo “es fácil dejarse seducir por elementos muy superficiales: el éxito, el dinero, la fama, el estar activo; pero el oficio tiene otros motores que hay que encontrar en el camino, son esas historias de personajes que te hacen vibrar, que te hacen ponerte en marcha”.

How did you come across the story of a schoolteacher who met John Lennon in 1966?
I was in Almeria, in the south of Spain, where my family went a lot, and I opened the paper and read a story about a monument on Lennon, because it was 40 years since he came there to film How I Won the War. And I read about this teacher explaining that he was 42 at the time and he made a trip to meet John Lennon with these notebooks of Beatles lyrics that he used to teach English to his students. He spent 15 minutes with him, and he used a Spanish expression: he said Lennon «seemed to me like a perfect caballero».

But the films also includes two other central characters, a young boy running away from home and a young pregnant teen.
When I saw the story about the teacher, I said to my daughter, «Here’s a great character for a movie.» I didn’t say, «Here’s a great movie». But some months later it clicked with a story that happened in my family, when my brother ran out because he wanted long hair.
